The teams in the game are all real teams, along with that, you can recruit more players you think are excellent to make the match more exciting. Each team plays 16 games over 17 weeks, with one bye week, as per the real-life NFL format at the time.

Matchups

The matchups and weekly schedule align closely with the NFL season. Teams face divisional rivals twice and compete against other teams based on real NFL scheduling rules from that era.

Simulated timeframe

Games progress week by week in the season mode, and you can view the upcoming matchups for every team.

Game modes

Season Mode: Allows you to play or simulate games throughout the schedule.
Playoff Mode: Directly jumps into the postseason based on default or custom standings.

Key dates

Wildcard Round: Begins after Week 17.
Playoffs: Include Wild Card, Divisional, Conference Championships, and the final Tecmo Bowl (Super Bowl equivalent).

How to play

Pick a game mode

There are 4 game modes that you can choose:

Preseason: Practice or play single games.
Season: Play a full NFL season (17 weeks, plus playoffs).
Pro Bowl: Play as an all-star team from the AFC or NFC.
Playoffs: Skip the regular season and jump straight into the postseason.

Choose a team

During the season, pick one of the 28 NFL teams. According on player ratings, teams have different strengths that can lead you to victory or not.

Master the controls

Snap the Ball: Press A to start the play.
Pass the Ball: Use D-Pad to highlight a receiver and press A to throw.
Run: Use the D-Pad to move and press B to break tackles.
Defensive Moves: Press A to dive/tackle, and use the D-Pad to move your player.
Kick/Punt: Press A to start the power meter, then press A again for accuracy.

Select plays

On Offense: Choose from 4 running plays and 4 passing plays. Use D-Pad and A to pick.
On Defense: Predict the offense's play by selecting the same play number. This causes a "play breakdown," stopping the offense easily.

Understand the gameplay

On offense

Run plays: Follow blockers and avoid defenders.
Passing plays: Look for open receivers and avoid interceptions.

On defense

Choose a defender to control before the snap.
Use the D-Pad to position yourself, and A to tackle or intercept.

Kicking game

Adjust power and direction for field goals, punts, or kickoffs.

Aim for the Playoffs

Gaining victories will help you raise your record and earn a postseason spot. To get to and win the Tecmo Bowl (Super Bowl), you must compete in the Wild Card, Divisional, and Conference rounds.

In offensive mode, avoid defenders by using the "zig-zag" strategy.
Analyze the play patterns of your opponents to forecast their defensive strategies.
